WARNING - Office file Validation
Who: All users of Windows 2000 Prof., XP, Vista and Win 7 with Office 2003 (2007 and 2010 are un-tested)
What: A Microsoft ‘High Priority’ Update (This means it will process automatically)
Named: “Microsoft Office File Validation Add-In” (See more on what this is about below)
Why: ...be concerned? Because…
This update is responsible for an extra delay of 5 to 6 minutes when accessing a network-based Excel file. The same file if on a local hard disk’s desktop or in a ‘C:’ drive file folder will open in 3 to 5 seconds. Apparently the validation procedure IS NOT working with network shared files in the way that Microsoft expected…
How: In the coming days we’ll help you remove the offending update if you have it, and then block it to be sure it is not allowed to process again, or for the first time. (To try this yourself see our guide titled: "Microsoft Updates-Blocking & Removing What, Why and How").

So this warning is
ONLY
aimed at protecting your frustration. We had one client with some significant impact over two days while we figured out what was going on and what was the likely cause. Then we removed the update and everything returned to normal. There IS NO threat of a virus or spyware infection. It’s simply what Microsoft intended as an improvement, which for many folks isn’t! |
