The next disruptive technology?

Wikipedia is not always 100% right but it gets disruptive technology pretty well defining it:  "A disruptive technology or disruptive innovation is an innovation that improves a product or service in ways that the market does not expect, typically by being lower priced or designed for a different set of consumers."  May of us are familiar with disruptive technologies like:

  • Mini-computers which replaced expensive mainframe computers in the 1970's and early 80's only to be 'disruptively replaced' themselves by cheaper microcomputers (PCs and Macs) in the mid 80's.

  • Micro computing which also touched off waves of new disruptions for folks who used typewriters, engaged in traditional publishing, required offset printing, used cash registers in stores, and were involved in film-based photography, just to make a few!

  • Television and then the Internet which changed our ideas about how to see movies, broadcast a message, conduct a political campaign, and recently even to share the horror of a country in revolution.

With that perspective we believe the Internet is more-and-more becoming a primary tool to devise and launch new disruptions!  A ZDNet article "The Internet devalues everything it touches " (6-20-2009) points the way in suggesting that the Internet is fast becoming the preferred source of processing power for a wide variety of content and applications that are cheaper and more accessible.  Consider music, movies, newspapers,  advertising, and much much more...

In a recent 'Only with the Internet' story a far-flung group of experts are about to win $1MM after having developed a new algorithm for picking movies of interest to NetFlix members.  Their solution improves on the current system by 10%.  Their collaboration demonstrates the disruptive force of the Internet by enabling 'Prize Economics' as a practical alternative to 'in-house' research and development.   (See the New York Times 6-27-09)

As the economy recovers we encourage you to look forward with us to the disruptions ahead that are actually a 'common feature' of human history (Click è 'Bronze Age' for a historical update J ).  The Internet is certain to be fertile ground for many of them!

Links to aid / avoid your own disruptions...

  1. PREVENT DISRUPTIONS... - Mozy is online BackUp software that we featured just last month, and that many of our clients use.  Best of all users get up to 2GB of BackUp FREE, or an unlimited amount for a few dollars a month.  If you're home PC is NOT YET backed-up we recommend you STOP what you're doing RIGHT NOW, download and install Mozy backup,  (click è here).  (You'll actually get 2.3 GB of space by using this 2SS.Com 'referral link' and in the future you'll be able to get more space by referring others as well.)

  2. NO DISRUPTION! -  Internet Explorer 8.0?  We say YES!  The move from IE 6 to IE 7 was a BIG one, but we've tested IE 8 'OK' and found only a modest changes.  If you've been holding back from upgrading we encourage you to proceed.  Or let us know and we can assist you online or on-site.  (You can get IE 8.0 via 'Windows Update' or by clicking è here).

  3. GOOD DISRUPTION? - Google has announced a potentially important feature for it's annual $50 subscription to Google Apps.  It's the ability of 'Google Apps Sync' (ç Click for more info.) to keep the Outlook file on your PC synchronized with Google's applications for E-mail (e.g. GMail), Calendar and Contacts.  Reviewers suggest that it still needs some work, but the use of Google Apps instead of the much more expensive Microsoft Exchange disruption is here and coming fast!

  4. AVOID MINOR DISRUPTIONS - At 2SS.Com we are users of a simple program called RoboForm that's very popular.  It simply runs on your PC to remember and apply passwords and complete forms any time you encounter them so the minor disruptions they pose to your real objective are minimized.  You can try RoboForm free for 30 days with limited functionality thereafter (Click è here), but it's well worth the $29.95 registration fee (click è here) if you spend much time logging on and filling in!

  5. NO FILE DISRUPTION? - We encourage our clients to routinely defragment their PCs and many use the the tool built into Windows XP at [Start] è [Programs] è [Accessories] è [System Tools] è [Disk Defragmenter].  Some use the 'Speed Disk' tool included in SystemWorks.  But to schedule automatically and then forget defragmentation the best software is DisKeeper. Clients that have standardized on it and rarely need to attend to defragmentation.  Pricing is a concern, with a new copy of the 2009 version over $100, but we have addressed this by acquiring older versions (e.g. 9 and 10) for about $35 via eBay and we recommend this as a cost-effective way to spend no time and have 'NO FILE DISRUPTION'
