The 2SS.Com Intro. Pack:

Outlook & Google working together?

We're pleased, and we suspect that you will be to, to have heard about and already tried the new Google tool aimed at linking (all the time) your Outlook and Google Calendars.  This means that you can access and review your calendar from anywhere, and if you authorize it others can see and even access your schedule too!

Here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Be a user of Outlook (Apparently there are no limits on Outlook version, 2000, XP, 2003 or 2007)

  2. Have or create a Google GMail account (Of course you don't need to actively commit to using GMail).  To get GMail visit www.Google.Com and click on [Sign in] in the upper left hand corner of the page.

  3. Visit http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/topic.py?topic=13946&intention=13730

  4. Download the synchronization software

  5. Follow the prompts to install the software and enter when asked  your GMail account and password.

  6. If the installation, and username password set-up are correct you'll see a synchronization begin right away and thereafter your Outlook and Google calendars will work together!

This is an interesting and useful development and a sign of things to come.  We suspect it won't be long before you'll have this kind of functionality with contacts and tasks too!  Already it's possible to import contacts from Outlook using a '.CSV' file which works one-time to create a web accessible and usable copy of your current Outlook contacts.

If this interests you and you have questions or problems please don't hesitate to call!

Virus, Spyware & Bots... The What, Why & How?

What?
Many computer users wonder if they’re safe from Viruses, Spyware and now even Bots.  If the differences between security software and the motives of security software vendors interest you, you might like to review the article at: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Security/Who-Wants-to-Pay-Twice-for-the-Same-Software/

A quick summary is that the article calls for what we’re all likely to already expect.  It suggests that just one security software package should take care of Viruses, Spyware and Bots

Why?
The objective as the above article suggests should make it easier to practice ‘safe computing’.  Not harder.  Consolidation is helping to improve the ‘safe computing’ landscape from jus a year or two ago.  But its still got a ways to go!

How?
We’re not there yet, but vendors like McAfee, Trend Data and Symantec are moving us (maybe too gradually) closer, while they and others also move to exploit marketing opportunities to sell and promote specialized solutions in the mean time.

A 'PS:' to 2SS.Com clients:
Many of you are using Norton SystemWorks 2006 which was among the first of the integrated virus and spyware checkers.
