‘     DISASTER – A BRAVE & HUMBLE WATCH

‘     ==================================    ‘

‘     How could anyone not be humbled by the      ‘

‘     disastrous events of 9-11-2001?  It was another    ‘

‘     day of infamy like several anyone who reaches     ‘

‘     adulthood is likely to have emblazoned on his    ‘

‘     or her mind.    ‘

‘     We suspect that, like us, many of you are     ‘

‘     proud of the American reaction and the way    ‘

‘     President Bush and other national leaders have    ‘

‘     responded.  We think this reaction is an     ‘

‘     American tradition that Tom Brokaw's    ‘

‘     “The Greatest Generation” (Adults of WWII),    ‘

‘     has (maybe more than we realized) instilled in our

‘     9-11-2001 generation as well.     ‘

‘     What a time we are in when we can see     ‘

‘     such tragedy unfold live on TV, live ‘numb’ for    ‘

‘     days after while sharing that experience,    ‘

‘     and then visit a specially-composed Internet     ‘

‘     World-Wide-Web site www.LibertyUnites.Org     ‘

‘     (Literally hundreds of involved service     ‘

‘     organizations are listed) to offer our support.

‘     It’s a time to be:    ‘

‘     *  Watchful of the potentials this disaster     ‘

‘         represents,    ‘

‘     *  Humbled by the unity in which our nation    ‘

‘        and its leaders are responding, and     ‘

‘     *  Brave in the tradition of the ‘Greatest    ‘

‘        Generation’ and the many generations    ‘

‘        before that combine to make America     ‘

‘        a force to be reckoned with.  In 2001, it’s   ‘

‘        undisputedly the most overwhelmingly    ‘

‘        powerful one on Earth.     ‘

‘     In the midst of this tragedy…     ‘

‘                    God (continues to) Bless America!    ‘

‘     QUESTIONS?     ‘

‘     -------------------------------------------------------------     ‘

‘     ARE VIRUS CONCERNS OVERBLOWN?     ‘

‘     Last month’s E-News feature ‘THE ATTACK OF    ‘

‘     THE SUMMER VIRUSES’ was sounding an alarm,

‘     one that is all too clear to businesses in the      ‘

‘     Sacramento region.  The front page of the     ‘

‘     Sacramento Business Journal dated     ‘

‘     October 5, 2001 quotes Dennis Ford of    ‘

‘     Inland Materials as having lost 10 days and     ‘

‘     nearly $30,000 in sales due to a strike of the      ‘

‘     ‘Nimda’ worm and virus that was not yet fully     ‘

‘     resolved.     ‘

‘     The Nimda worm and virus spreads itself via     ‘

‘     E-mail and, then, once launched or displayed,     ‘

‘     continues to spread via shared drives on     ‘

‘     your network.  The worm component of Nimda   ‘

‘     is what spreads and the virus component does     ‘

‘     the damage       ‘

‘     ANYTHING NEW ABOUT WINDOWS XP?   ‘

‘     NOPE!  Our advice remains the same.  If you’re     ‘

‘     buying a new PC consider it.  Otherwise don’t’     ‘

‘     upgrade unless you are upgrading from

’     Windows 95, 98 or ME.    ‘

‘     In different terms, if you have Windows 2000    ‘

‘     hold on for Windows - Next!     ‘

‘     [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]     ‘

‘     ---------------------Item Three-------------------------      ‘

‘     PRODUCT WATCH     ‘

‘     MICROSOFT-NEW PRICING MODEL ANYONE?    ‘

‘     In a recent market research survey of over 4,500     ‘

‘     technology professionals, more than 80% believed   ‘

‘     they would pay more under Microsoft’s new    ‘

‘     licensing programs. And, nearly half thought that     ‘

‘     software costs would increase 20% to 50%.      ‘

‘     Less than 5% expected a decrease.     ‘

‘     In the same survey, 36 % said they would     ‘

‘     consider replacement products inspired by      ‘

‘     Microsoft’s new pricing.     ‘

‘     LITTLE LAPTOP LIGHT   ‘

‘     Wondering what to do late at night on the      ‘

‘     plane or when you’re trying to work in bed without

‘     awakening your spouse?  This is the amazing     ‘

‘     $20 answer form Kensington (800-235-6708).      ‘

‘     It requires just 90 seconds per hour of precious     ‘

‘     laptop battery when plugged into a USB port.    ‘

‘     IS YOUR  DATABASE SOFTWARE OK?     ‘

‘     In a recent (10-16-01) review of popular     ‘

‘     databases, PC Magazine gave its ‘Editor’s     ‘

‘     Choice’ award to Microsoft Access 2002, the    ‘

‘     database that in some form (Access 97,    ‘

‘     Access 2000) you are likely to already have as a     ‘

‘     part of the Microsoft Office suite.     ‘

‘     In giving Access its top pick, PC Magazine     ‘

‘     noted “ it offers the most power while remaining      ‘

‘     extremely easy to use.”  So unless you can     ‘

‘     get a canned-solution (accounting and contact     ‘

‘     management are two good examples of pre-     ‘

‘     packaged solutions that BEAT ones like Access     ‘

‘     which you build from scratch.), Access is a great     ‘

‘     tool to build your custom system.     ‘

‘     If your needs are simpler (e.g. managing a list),      ‘

‘     the same folks recommend a product we’ve      ‘

‘     noted here before--Intuit’s www.QuickBase.Com     ‘

‘     It’s available with many starter templates and      ‘

‘     accessible via the World-Wide-Web from     ‘

‘     anywhere.     ‘

‘     [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]     ‘

‘     ----------------------Item Four--------------------------      ‘

‘     STRATEGIC/USEFUL/INTERESTING LINKS     ‘

‘     -------------------------------------------------------------     ‘

‘     NEED A NEW OR FIRST WEB SITE FAST?     ‘

‘     You can build a Web site on-line at any of…     ‘

‘    1.  www.HomeStead.Com which is PC     ‘

‘         Magazine’s ‘Editor’s Choice’ in this category.     ‘

‘         They have personal sites from $10 a month    ‘

‘         and business sites starting at $30.     ‘

‘     2.  www.Tripod.Com and www.About.Com both     ‘

‘         use www.Trellix.Com software to help you      ‘

‘         build your site.    ‘

‘     3.  www.ZyWeb.Com has hundreds of templates     ‘

‘          allowing an amateur Webmaster to get a quick    ‘

‘          start.    ‘

‘     4.  www.MoonFruit.Com is based on     ‘

‘          Macromedia’s Flash authoring tool and     ‘

‘          makes for an interesting graphical site if you

‘          don’t need features like a shopping cart.     ‘

‘     5.  www.Balthaser.Com provides tools for     ‘

‘          professionals building Macromedia Flash      ‘

‘          sites.  It requires a minimum 400 MHz PC to    ‘

‘          use along with 96MB RAM. When your      ‘

‘          site is finished, you buy it for $299 and they     ‘

‘          send it to the URL you designate. They also     ‘

‘           have rates as low as $49 for just a single page.   ‘
