‘     COMPUTING FABRICS     ‘

‘     The concept of a giant world-wide-computer      ‘

‘     was the stuff of science fiction just a dozen      ‘

‘     years ago.  In 1998 some might claim it’s      ‘

‘     coming to life with the advent of the Internet’s     ‘

‘     World-Wide-Web.  Now new unifying concepts      ‘

‘     and technologies are developing on a number     ‘

‘     of fronts.

‘     One of the most provocative is called     ‘

‘     COMPUTING FABRICS.  The concept it      ‘

‘     advances is inexpensive and limitless      ‘

‘     computing power that threatens to change the     ‘

‘     balance of power among major technology      ‘

‘     vendors.     ‘

‘     The computing fabrics concept is many PCs    ‘

‘     inter-linked so effectively they appear to users     ‘

‘     as a single giant computer..  They might be    ‘

‘     PC’s similar to the one on your desktop, but      ‘

‘     instead of working alone, they are woven     ‘

‘     into massively (e.g. 100 or more processors)     ‘

‘     parallel supercomputers.     ‘

‘     Another significant force in making computing      ‘

‘     fabrics a reality is the approach it calls for in       ‘

‘     connecting computers.  Computer fabrics would     ‘

‘     erase the distinctions between current networks    ;’

‘     (Novell and Windows NT) and computer     ‘

‘     connection architectures (IBM’s SNA and the     ‘

‘     Internet’s TCP/IP).  In their place we’d see what     ‘

‘     appears to be a single giant easy to access and      ‘

‘     easy to use system.  It’s the ease-of-use and total    ‘

‘     accessibility that make this technology so     ‘

‘     compelling.      ‘‘

‘     Other vendors have other technology initiatives      ‘

‘     that aim in a similar direction.  Examples include:     ‘

‘     *  Jini from Sun Microsystems     ‘

‘     *  T-Spaces being developed by IBM     ‘

‘     *  Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) in R&D at the      ‘

‘        Oakridge National Laboratories    ‘

‘     *  Project Millennium being undertaken by      ‘

‘        Microsoft     ‘

‘     *  Inferno by Lucent Technologies      ‘

‘     The underlying strength of the idea behind all       ‘

‘     these technologies is the simple interconnection      ‘

‘     of computing capabilities among a large variety      ‘

‘     of devices that as a result of the connections can      ‘

‘     work together.  A simple example that exists today   ‘

‘     is a suddenly overloaded Internet WWW site that     ‘

‘     is programmed to automatically begin storing data    ‘

‘     on other 'more available' computers.  They then     ‘

‘     begin to WORK TOGETHER to handle the     ‘

‘     increased load.     ‘

‘     All these state-of-the-art initiatives are actually       ‘

‘     new names (and to be fair new approaches) to       ‘

‘     old concepts like distributed database and      ‘

‘     distributed systems.  Regardless of the name the     ‘

‘     key idea has is to get components to work      ‘

‘     together in a simple way, no matter how     ‘

‘     comparatively 'smart' (e.g. a PC or super-    ‘

‘     computer) or 'dumb' (a printer, PDA or Cell     ‘

‘     phone) they might be.     ‘

‘     The pragmatic side of all this today includes:     ‘

‘     *  Network servers and workstations capable of      ‘

‘        utilizing multiple processors     ‘

‘     *  Increasingly good tools to tie disparate      ‘

‘        networks (e.g. Novell, Windows NT and the     ‘

         Internet) together, and      ‘

‘     *  Forces that will surely create the ‘Computing    ‘

‘        Fabric’ of the future no matter what we finally     ‘

‘        call the technology that achieves it.     ‘

‘     One important action item is to consider making     ‘

‘     PC and especially network server purchases that      ‘

‘     can utilize multiple processors and hard disks.      ‘

‘     We already know with certainty that you’ll need     ‘

‘     more of both in the future.

‘     --------------Item Two-----------      ‘

‘     Product Watch    ‘

‘     DO YOU USE INTERNET EXPLORER 4?     ‘

‘     If so you might try a way to cut down on the time      ‘

‘     it takes to enter a Web site address in IE 4.0's      ‘

‘     Address Bar. Type in the middle part of the      ‘

‘     address, then press [Ctrl] [Enter], and IE 4.0 will     ‘

‘     add ‘http://www.’ before the entry, and ‘.com’      ‘

‘     after it.  (Use MSIE 5.0 Beta? - Next month)   ‘

‘     THE INTERNET?     ‘

‘     If you or an associate have any doubts about the      ‘

‘     impact of the Internet and its potential to make       ‘

‘     money, here are a few recent news clips that      ‘

‘     provide convincing evidence:     ‘

‘     America Online Inc. has signed deals with three    ‘

‘     online brokerages giving them top placement in    ‘

‘     the service's new finance center in exchange     ‘

‘     for a total of $75 million.      ‘

‘     For $75 million, E*Trade Group, DLJDirect Inc.,     ‘

‘     and Waterhouse Securities Inc. bought 2 years of     ‘

"     premier placement" on AOL’s finance channel,     ‘

‘     which AOL describes as its most popular site.      ‘

‘     Qwest Communications International Inc. has      ‘

‘     agreed to pay Netscape Communications Corp.    ‘

‘     $25 million for 3 years to promote its     ‘

‘     telecommunications services to millions of    ‘

‘     customers who cross Netscape’s, NetCenter,     ‘

      Web site.    ‘

‘     What do these search engine competitors have     ‘

‘     in common?    ‘

‘     *  Compaq's AltaVista,    ‘

‘     *  Infoseek Corp.,     ‘

‘     *  Lycos Inc., and      ‘

‘     *  CNet's Snap!    ‘

‘     Each of has agreed to pay for the privilege     ‘

‘     of becoming one of the premier search    ‘

‘     engineS on the MSN Start at       ‘

‘     (http://home.microsoft.com/). In exchange for     ‘

‘     their payments totaling $60 million, the four sites     ‘

‘     are each guaranteed a minimum number  of ad      ‘

‘     impressions.      ‘

‘    You may not have millions to invest in marketing,    ‘

but you certainly can be thinking about and      ‘

‘     investing in Internet marketing channels.

‘     GLOBAL WIRELESS PHONE?     ‘

‘     Ericsson has announced its I-888 World phone  ‘

‘     that offers global roaming capabilities and includes   ‘

‘     a built-in modem for E-Mail.  It can also send and    ‘

‘     receive faxes, browse the Internet and access a    ‘

‘     company network.  The new device weighs just     ‘

‘     6.3 oz. and measures 5.2” long by 1.9” thick.        ‘

‘     (From PCS System & Tech Magazine, Nov. 1998).   ‘

‘     ISDN CONNECTION IN CA?     ‘

‘     Pacific Bell, (800) 472-ISDN or www.pacbell.com

‘     has installation fees ranging from $125 to $250      ‘

‘     and a monthly fee of under $35. This pricing is     ‘

‘     some of the most attractive available anywhere     ‘

‘     in the US.  If ISDN interests you we recommend    ‘

‘     you order through your ISP and be sure they      ‘

‘     agree to stay on the hook as you go through the      ‘

‘     sometimes challenging installation process.    ‘

‘     BEAM ME UP?     ‘

‘     CalTech researchers claim to have conducted the    ‘

‘     first ‘real’ teleportation al-la Star Trek’s     ‘

‘     ‘Beam me up’ science fiction.     ‘;

‘     The first ever successful teleportation experiment    ‘

‘     actually teleported a beam of light across a     ‘

‘     laboratory bench. NOT physically, but the     ‘

‘     properties of the beam were transferred to     ‘

‘     another beam.  As a result the second beam     ‘

became an exact duplicate of the first    ‘

‘     In a telephone interview, Jeff Kimble, a physics     ‘

‘     professor at the California Institute of      ‘

‘     Technology, noted his belief that quantum      ‘

‘     teleportation might eventually transform     ‘

‘     everyday life.  For more on teleportation go to:     ‘

‘     5 STRATEGIC, PRACTICLE & ‘COOL’ LINKS   ‘

‘     Following are links that are useful, interesting,    ‘

‘     and help show the powerful reach of the Internet:      ‘

1.   http://support.microsoft.com/support/c.asp?M=F    ‘

‘     Is a great place to begin getting useful help on    ‘

‘     Microsoft software.  It’s also a good model for     ‘

‘     How to automate the delivery of support to anyone   ‘

‘     for most any information sharing reason.   Give it    ‘

‘     a try and imagine learning how to set up your     ‘

‘     new toy, program a VCR, or execute an in-home    ‘

‘     medical procedure.  Get the idea?

2.   http://officeupdate.microsoft.com is a good     ‘

‘     place to keep up with Microsoft Office and     ‘

‘     therefore the future.  Microsoft tries out it’s new     ‘

‘     technology plans (e.g. right mouse button use     ‘

‘     was one example) in Office before putting it into      ‘

‘     its operating systems.    ‘

3.   http://www.hoovers.com Free information on     ‘

‘     over 13,500 public and private companies.

4.   http://www.usps.gov/ncsc let’s you look-up     ‘

‘     Zip Codes using just your browser.  Maybe      ‘

‘     not strategic, but certainly useful.

5.    http://www.ipix.com is a WWW site that      ‘

‘      features some very unique 3-D visuals that are     ‘

‘      surely a sign of things to come on computers      ‘

‘      and the Internet.     ‘
