Recommending A Norton AntiVirus Alternative?

After years of shaking out, the market for AntiVirus software is boiling-down to FREE!  We still like the visual user management tools in SystemWorks (comes with Norton AntiVirus)  but when it makes sense to SAVE that small added investment we've begun using Microsoft's Security Essentials along with an old version of SystemWorks (and NO Norton Antivirus) for a combination that still offers all the tools, and that's very cost-effective too!

Windows
Microsoft Security EssentialsSecurity Essentials is capable software providing all the needed features including continuous monitoring of all the files on your computer, automatic updates of virus signatures and periodic 'off-hours' full scans of all your files.  If you have a PC with no virus protection there's NO EXCUSE, all you need is a legitimate copy of Windows and an Internet connection to download, install and begin to use this software. (To download Windows Security Essentials click here.)

P.S.   For many folks with software installed and working it's still cheaper at $30 or so to update Norton AntiVirus than to remove the software and loose both the working installation and the other valuable components that come with it.  So you won't see us changing fast, but case-by-case well be encouraging some folks take advantage of FREE!

For a friend with no AntiVirus software, or any suspected problem you might use one of the FREE online virus scanning tools.  Useful online virus scanners are available from Symantec and McAfee.  (ç To take a look or to actually start a scan just click, an 'Active X' control will be installed)

TClocker, CRITICAL Update, 'i' & More :

  2. CRITICAL Update for Internet Explorer...Many of you will already have it processed and working, but in case you don't yet, or you'd like to check, here's the What, Why and How:

What:  A CRITICAL update for all versions (5 to 8, and particularly important for 5 and 6) of Internet Explorer
Why:  To prevent un-intentionally starting potentially destructive program code when viewing a specially crafted web-page. as well as fixing some other lesser threats.
How: By processing normal Microsoft updates (e.g. inside Internet Explorer choose [Tools] and [Windows Update]If no updates are available you're probably covered!  You can verify this or any update by clicking at left [Review your update history] and looking for this entry for your version: "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB978207) (ç Click for more Microsoft knowledge base article)

  3. Why are you seeing that ad?  Very soon you'll begin to see this symbol (White “i” surrounded by a circle on a blue background) on or near online ads.  When consumers click on it the icon, they will be taken to a page explaining how their Web surfing history and demographic data are being used by the advertiser to send selected ads.  It's all the result of the advertising industry trying to avoid regulation by the Federal Trade Commission.  To read more from a recent New York times article "A Little "i" to Teach About Online Privacy"  click here.

  4. Norton AntiVirus  UpdateCALL US! - We try to keep several copies around to help clients update for about $35.00, rather than using the Symantec automated renewal website with pricing of at least $49.99   If your virus subscription is running out we can often help you renew it in just a couple minutes via remote support.

  5. How is 'Windows 7' doing so far?  Comparing the 'two-month' mark (5.7% of market) it beats Vista at 'two-months' (2.04%) and all the versions of apple's OS-X combined 4.87).  See the full ZDNet article here.  (NOTE:  Users with new PCs and 'Windows 7' are still permitted to downgrade to Windows XP if desired.  An article with more downgrade details. is available here.)
