‘     WHICH OS?‘

‘     -------------------------------------------------------------     ‘

‘     Last month we suggested that the time is right     ‘

‘     to plan an upgrade to Windows 2000 prof-    ‘

‘     essional.  This month we’re tempering that     ‘

‘     recommendation just a little.     ‘

‘     The decision on your next OS has a lot to do     ‘

‘     with:    ‘

‘     *  How old your hardware is     ‘

‘     *  What you use your computer for, and     ‘

‘     *  How you bought or will buy your computer.    ‘

‘     HOW OLD IS YOUR HARDWARE?    ‘

‘     The rules of thumb are fairly clear as they     ‘

‘     relate to older hardware.  Stick with Windows 95    ‘

‘     for any PC that fits the following (note our      ‘

‘     recommended minimums in parenthesis):     ‘

‘          Processor                               386DX     ‘

‘          (we suggest 486-66 w/ 64 MB RAM min.)    ‘

‘          RAM                                       4 to 8 + MB (64)     ‘

‘          Hard Disk space available     30-45 MB free     ‘

‘          Monitor                                   VGA    ‘

‘          CD-ROM                                Not Required     ‘

‘          3.5” Floppy                             Yes     ‘

‘          Modem                                   14.4 (56.6)     ‘

‘          Sound Card                            Ok     ‘

‘     Move or stick with Windows 98SE for PCs with:     ‘

‘          Processor                               486 66    ‘

‘          (we suggest Pentium w/ 64 MB RAM min.)     ‘

‘          RAM                                       16 to 24+ MB(128) ‘

‘          Hard Disk space available     120-295 MB free    ‘

‘          Monitor                                   VGA     ‘

‘          CD-ROM                                 Required    ‘

‘          3.5” Floppy                             Yes     ‘

‘          Modem                                   14.4 (56.6)     ‘

‘          Sound Card                            Ok     ‘

‘     Consider Windows ME for a system with:     ‘

‘          Processor                               P-150 (PIII 600+)   ‘

‘          RAM                                       32 MB (128)     ‘

‘          Hard Disk space available     480-645 MB free    ‘

‘          Monitor                                   VGA     ‘

‘          CD-ROM                                Yes     ‘

‘          3.5” Floppy                             For convenience    ‘

‘          Modem                                   28.8 (56.6)     ‘

‘          Sound Card                            Ok     ‘

‘     And, we’d say JUMP at the chance to move to     ‘

‘     Windows 2000 Professional with a new or     ‘

‘     upgraded  system that includes:        ‘

‘          Processor                               P-133+ (PIII 600+)  ‘

‘          RAM                                       64 MB (128)     ‘

‘          Hard Disk space available     650 MB Free with    ‘

‘                                                         2 GB min.    ‘

‘          Monitor                                   VGA     ‘

‘          CD-ROM                                Yes     ‘

‘          3.5” Floppy                             For convenience    ‘

‘          Modem                                   56.6     ‘

‘          Sound Card                            Ok     ‘

‘    USING ME?‘

‘     Consider Windows ME if using your computer     ‘

‘     for music, pictures and video are some among      ‘

‘     your interests.  “ME” comes with software that      ‘

‘     allows you to begin working with each of these.     ‘

‘     ‘WIN2KPRO’ AT WORK?     ‘

‘     Windows 2000 Prof. (Win2KPro) is very likely the    ‘

‘     operating system of choice for business-oriented     ‘

‘     users at home and/or at work.    ‘

‘     As I write this newsletter I am on a Win2KPro     ‘

‘     PC that has worked without error or     ‘

‘     re-booting for three (3) days.  That may not    ‘

‘     seem like much, but it’s a real advantage to a     ‘

‘     heavy Widows 95 user accustomed to re-booting     ‘

‘     by accident or on purpose at least three to six    ‘

‘     times a day.     ‘

‘     There are a few (primarily set-up) hurdles to      ‘’

‘     mastering Win2KPro but at 2SS.Com we     ‘

‘     believe they’re well worth the effort.  If your PC    ‘

‘     can be upgraded inexpensively or if your ready     ‘

‘     for a new one, Win2KPro is an option you’re     ‘

‘     likely to get a lot of value from.    ‘

‘     ---------------------Item Three-------------------------      ‘

‘                        PRODUCT WATCH     ‘

‘     -------------------------------------------------------------     ‘

‘     UPDATE NOTES ON SPEECH RECOGNITION    ‘

‘     ‘BeVocal’, ‘Nuance’, and ‘SpeechWorks’ offer     ‘

‘     services to deliver voice-enabled content via.      ‘

‘     the Internet’s World-Wide-Web.    ‘

‘     ‘Tellme Networks’ has a service that allows     ‘

‘     users to use spoken commands to search the      ‘

‘     Internet.      ‘

‘     ‘Sound Advantage’ offers "SANDi," an electronic     ‘

‘     receptionist that is at the center of a voice-    ‘

‘     activated call-processing system.  SANDi can use    ‘

‘     an existing phone system to automatically answer    ‘

‘     calls, sort through and re-direct calls, screen,      ‘

‘     forward, retrieve and send e-mails, and provide a     ‘

‘     number of related services. Company founder and    ‘

‘     CEO Michael Metcalf was quoted “If you didn't     ‘

‘     know SANDi was a computer, you'd think it was    ‘

‘     human.”      ‘

‘     Those in the know predict that before 2050 all       ‘

‘     communication will be “device-oriented” to use the    ‘

‘     words of Jay Wilpon, (Mr Wilpon is director of      ‘

‘     advanced speech research at AT&T Labs in NJ,    ‘

‘     and has been involved in speech-recognition     ‘

‘     research for 20 years.)     ‘

‘     Wilpon suggests we begin to imagine our      ‘

‘     televisions, refrigerators, stoves, vacuum      ‘

‘     cleaners and more able to respond to our

‘     spoken commands.     ‘

‘          also available from Symantec at:     ‘

‘     3.  Here is a reviewer who DOESN’T QUITE     ‘

‘          Agree with our opinion at 2SS.Com.  They      ‘

‘          tried Win2KPro and ended (at least     ‘

‘          temporarily) going back to Win 98SE.     ‘
