‘     --------------------------Item One----------------------     ‘

‘                         STRATEGIC BACKUP?

 ‘     -------------------------------------------------------------     ‘

‘     It’s dull, un-imaginative and not very strategic unless     ‘

‘     of course you find yourself missing a file, or worse,    ‘

‘     trying to recover from a damaged or destroyed     ‘

‘     computer.    ‘

‘     Most of us know the worst enemy of good regular    ‘

‘     and comprehensive backups is long-term success.  But     ‘

‘     there is certainty in not being backed-up.  It is that    ‘

sooner or later you’ll wish you were.    ‘

‘     At 2SS.Com we believe the Golden Rule of backups is….’

‘                              KEEP IT SIMPLE!     ‘

‘     To do that we prefer to acquire backup tools that have     ‘

‘     two to four times the current backup requirement for     ‘

‘     the entire system.  That permits growth and makes    ‘

‘     both backup and recovery simple.      ‘

‘     A typical implementation might be a 12-24GB DAT     ‘

‘     tape unit for a 10 GB hard disk.  This means 12GB   ‘

‘     ‘as-is’ or 24GB compressed.  In-turn you can put in a     ‘

‘     tape every day (we label them Mon., Tues., Wed., etc.)     ‘

‘     and then get extras to insure you have a new tape     ‘

‘     for each Friday.  If you also replace the last day of the      ‘

‘     month with a new tape you end up being able to:     ‘

‘     *  Have all files available for recovery every day     ‘

‘     *  Have different versions of files if a bad one gets     ‘

‘        backed-up and you’d like to get back a good version    ‘

‘        of it      ‘

‘     *  Have historical access to files for the current month     ‘

‘        and with the monthly replacement even a year or     ‘

‘        two  or more.   ‘

‘     As you see our first rule of thumb is DON’T DO     ‘

‘     BACKUP cheap, Do it SIMPLE.  This translates to    ‘

‘     a backup system that works.  And the reasoning is

‘     simple too.  A backup system must work simply or      ‘

‘     its NOT very valuable.  Maybe useless.    ‘

‘     So, you might experiment with or supplement backups     ‘

‘     using selective, incremental and/or differential backup    ‘

‘     capabilities but don’t use them to save money.  We     ‘

‘     believe the strategic and ultimately most cost-     ‘

‘     effective solution is to avoid all the organization,     ‘

‘     change just one tape every day and PULL some out      ‘

‘     once a week and at month end to go off-site to a safe   ‘

‘     cool and dry place.  Simple?     ‘

‘     P.S. Remember to also consider power backup, disaster    ‘

‘     recovery backup and as above simple hardware/software    ‘     failure backups.     ‘

‘     PRODUCT WATCH

‘     -------------------------------------------------------------     ‘

‘     QUARTZ COMMUNICATOR     ‘

‘     The Palm pilot currently has 2 to 3 million users,      ‘

‘     enough for developers, users, component     ‘

‘     manufacturers, etc. all to be interested.  But, a     ‘

‘     new Quartz device is being introduced by the      ‘

‘     Symbian consortium (introduced at the CeBIT     ‘

‘     computer show in Germany) that demonstrates      ‘

‘     the reality of soon to be available handheld

‘     devices with features like PCS telephony,

‘     streaming multimedia, Web browsing and ‘Palm    ‘

‘     Pilot –like’ computing.      ‘

‘     The day is coming fast when cell-phone     ‘

‘     subscribers will upgrade their digital handsets     ‘

‘     to something like the Quartz Communicator.  And     ‘

‘     the bad news for PDA manufacturers (like Plan     ‘

‘     Computing) could be a price tag of ZERO    ‘

‘     ($0.00).  Low prices accompanied by monthly     ‘

‘     service contracts should see "smart" phones and      ‘

‘     communicators take a BIG slice of the cellular      ‘

‘     and PDA markets in 2002-2003.      ‘

‘     AOLTV?     ‘

‘     Watch (literally) for AOLTV this summer which     ‘

‘     should start up with a potential for 20 MM      ‘

‘     viewers who will be able to live chat curing their    ‘

‘     favorite soaps or even as part of the daily     ‘

‘     investment  news.  The GartnerGroup’s     ‘

‘     Dataquest division reports over 27MM adults     ‘

‘     currently watch TV while surfing the Web which is    ‘

‘     up from 8MM 1998     ‘

‘     Merrill Lynch senior Internet analyst, Henry    ‘

‘     Blodget, predicts that AOL "is in a good position     ‘

‘     to become the dominant consumer interface to     ‘

‘     interactivity across all devices".     ‘

‘     PCS PHONES?    ‘

‘     Last month we said…     ‘

‘     We’re in shopping mode. Expect a run-down     ‘

‘     in an upcoming issue on our experience in      ‘

‘     selecting a phone that can act minimally as

‘     PDA (Personal Digital Assistance) at least to     ‘

‘     the extent of downloading Outlook / ACT      ‘

‘     contacts and that includes Alpha-Paging, and     ‘

‘     other lesser features.  What do you     ‘

‘     recommend?     ‘

‘     Strategic Systems Panel member Peter Michael     ‘

‘     responded… “For PDA telephones, check out     ‘

‘     the Visor on Handspring’s web site.”    ‘

‘     Compromise and a broken PCS phone lead to     ‘

‘     an expedient solution with as a less functionality     ‘

‘     and more convenience choice than planned.

‘     The Motorola Star-TAC.  It won out on availability,    ‘

‘     small-size, battery life, vibrator setting and my     ‘

‘     favorite ‘open-to-answer’ flip phone functionality.    ‘

‘     Next time PDA functionality too?     ‘

‘     [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]     ‘

‘     -------------------------Item Three---------------------      ‘

‘     QUESTIONS     ‘

‘     -------------------------------------------------------------     ‘

‘     HOW WILL COMPUTERS WORK IN THE     ‘

‘     FUTURE?    ‘

‘     Maybe our silicon-based computing will lead to     ‘

‘     organic-based.  A Princeton University research   ‘

‘     group has used RNA to solve a problem that     ‘

‘     generated just one error in 1,024 possible     ‘

‘     solutions.  If you guessed that one is the most    ‘

‘     interesting to them you’re correct.  This is on the     ‘

‘     figurative heals of a similar project at the     ‘

‘     University of Southern Calif. where DNA was     ‘

‘     used with similar objectives in mind.     ‘

‘     WAS IT REALLY $350T by 2002?    ‘

‘     Couldn’t have been!’    ‘

‘     In the last issue of  E-News we noted the     ‘

‘     expectation of over $350 trillion in business to     ‘

      business e-commerce by 2002.  Strategic    ‘

‘     Systems Advisory Panel member Peter Michael

‘     points out “…it’s an impossible figure with gross     ‘

‘     world product not yet at $30 trillion.’  Would you      ‘

‘     accept $250 Billion instead?       ‘

‘                                             Thanks Pete     ‘

‘     WHAT ABOUT SHARING ON A SMALL    ‘

‘     OFFICE OR HOME NETWORK?    ‘

‘     2SS.Com is unfamiliar with the following product     ‘

‘     offering, but it appears to be feature-right and we     ‘

‘     though it might interest you nevertheless.     ‘

‘     602Pro LAN SUITE - Newly Updated!     ‘

‘     Unlimited Internet sharing, e-mail and fax,     ‘

‘     all-in-one application for your entire network!     ‘

‘     Looking for a simple, yet complete, cost-    ‘

‘     effective, all-in-one application to provide Internet      ‘

‘     access, e-mail, and fax services to your entire     ‘

‘     network?      ‘

‘     Shared Internet Access through 602Pro LAN      ‘

‘     SUITE  provides your network users with a secure      ‘

‘     connection to the Internet. With the current hardware     ‘

‘     on your network and this easy-to-use software you     ‘

‘     can share ONE Internet connection with all network     ‘

‘     users as simple as you share your printer.     ‘

‘     An unlimited user Intranet/Internet e-mail server    ‘

‘     is included. You can use any standard POP3 e-mail     ‘

‘     client (Outlook, Netscape Messenger, Eudora, etc.).       ‘

‘     The flexibility of 602Pro LAN SUITE allows it to     ‘

‘     grow with your network from a simple dial-up

‘     connection and shared POP3 account (domain     ‘

‘     aliased to one POP3 account) all the way to a     ‘

‘     static IP with direct SMTP sending and receiving.     ‘

‘     Share your one POP3 mailbox for any number of     ‘

‘     LAN users with your own domain name. Be     ‘

‘     in complete control of your e-mail needs!     ‘

‘     602Pro LAN SUITE includes a Network Fax Server     ‘

‘     that provides conventional fax services through a      ‘

‘     standard fax modem as well as Internet Faxing via     ‘

‘     NetMoves. Send faxes from any networked PC as     ‘

‘     easy as you a print document or send an e-mail.    ‘

‘     The Integrated Firewall will protect your network    ‘

‘     against unauthorized access. With the included      ‘

‘     application proxies you obtain a controlled channel      ‘

‘     between you and the destination addresses used on      ‘

‘     your network. Since the firewall is integrated      ‘

‘     into 602Pro LAN SUITE itself, it works closely with      ‘

‘     all parts to provide optimal protection to your network.     ‘

‘     602Pro LAN SUITE is fully controlled from a     ‘

‘     standard WWW browser. It can be managed across a     ‘

‘     LAN, WAN or  the Internet. The included web server     ‘

‘     can also be used for your web site hosting. The DHCP    ‘

‘     Server manages and distributes TCP/IP addresses to    ‘

‘     eliminate the time needed for hand-entering IP     ‘

‘     addresses into each workstation on the network.      ‘

‘     The included Installation wizard will setup 602Pro     ‘

‘     LAN SUITE for you in less than 10 minutes and the     ‘

one time fee for unlimited users guarantees this to be     ‘

‘     the best investment you ever made for your computer     ‘

‘     network!     ‘
