‘ STOLEN INSIGHTS? ‘
‘ The following trends and analysis are ‘
‘ from a research white-paper by ‘
‘ International Data Corp. (IDC). We’ve ‘
‘ paraphrased and augmented it for E-News. The ‘
‘ price tag for the complete report with all the ‘
‘ details is not cheap, but it is loaded with ‘
‘ insights. Here is a sprinkling that interested us. ‘
‘ FROM DISCOVERY TO COMPETITION ‘
‘ According to IDC’s research The Internet ‘
‘ has been in what they call a discovery stage ‘
‘ from 1995 to 1999 where a key factor was ‘
‘ simply showing up. IDC analysts foresee a ‘
‘ follow-on competition phase that will be ‘
‘ much tougher, particularly for businesses ‘
‘ that don’t’ already have a foothold and some ‘
‘ ‘profit-making’ success. ‘
‘ HOW TOUGH, HOW MUCH BUSINESS? ‘
‘ As much as $350 Trillion! Internet-based ‘
‘ business-to-business E-commerce is projected ‘
‘ to reach as much as $350 trillion by 2002. With ‘
‘ a major piece of that (over 30%) in ‘
‘ manufacturing-related E-commerce. ‘
‘ And, sales transactions are just one of many ‘
‘ business processes that will developed ‘
‘ and integrated. Every aspect of most any organ- ‘
‘ ization deserves to be re-thought as to how it can ‘
‘ be supported electronically. ‘
‘ AND, THE SERVE & SUPPORT SYSTEMS TOO! ‘
‘ Service and support organizations must become ‘
‘ smarter. The cost of making up for inefficient
‘ support will increasingly make it an unacceptable ‘
‘ expense. Systems that insure effective service
‘ and support won’t be advantageous, or even just ‘
‘ competitive, they will be essential tools for ‘
‘ survival. ‘
‘ EMBEDDING KNOWLEDGE ‘
‘ A key ingredient of successful systems will be ‘
‘ a corporate ethic aimed at insuring knowledge ‘
‘ is routinely captured so it can be found again. ‘
‘ Embedding knowledge can be as complex ‘
‘ as a system to store and retrieve service ‘
‘ information using a natural language (everyday ‘
‘ words) request. Or it might be as simple as ‘
‘ capturing knowledge, maybe just key values ‘
‘ and hints posted in the locations they’re needed. ‘
‘ A simple example we use at 2SS.Com is posting ‘
‘ a secure site’s logon name NOT PASSWORD ‘
‘ along with the favorite’s label (e.g. ‘Yahoo.Com ‘
‘ -REllis-’) so it’s there as a reminder when needed.) ‘
‘ SOPHISTICATION OF SYSTEMS ‘
‘ Following is a scale of sophistication that you ‘
‘ may wish to think about in terms of where you ‘
‘ are and where you’d like your organization to be. ‘
‘ How far could / should your organization ‘
‘ progress on it? ‘
‘ 1. Data Collection ‘
‘ 2. Discovery of Information in the Data, ‘
‘ 3. Summary status generated by systems ‘
‘ 4. Configuration of an automated monitoring ‘
‘ process ‘
‘ 5. Real-time performance analysis. (e.g. ‘
‘ Today’s sales, inventory, etc.) ‘
‘ 6. Historical Analysis ‘
‘ 7. Statistical Analysis using appropriate ‘
‘ (maybe sophisticated) techniques ‘
‘ 8. Automated Response ‘
‘ 9. Fault Tolerance ‘
‘ 10. Self Healing networks, systems and ‘
‘ applications ‘
‘ 11. Systems that devise new intelligence ‘
‘ 12. Systems that are aware of and capable of ‘
‘ managing subordinate systems ‘

‘ other lesser features. What do you ‘

‘ QUESTIONS ‘
‘ ------------------------------------------------------------- ‘
‘ WHO THINKS THE INTENRET IS A ‘TIDAL- ‘
‘ WAVE’ THAT’S STILL BUILDING, BESIDES ‘
‘ 2SS.COM? ‘
‘ Internet watchers estimate there are 65 million ‘
‘ Web users just in the United States, who ‘rack-up’
‘ an astonishing 50 million estimated hours of ‘
‘ Web surfing DAILY. Even more profound, the ‘
‘ numbers continue to grow exponentially. ‘
‘ "The Internet in 1999 was like television in ‘
‘ the year 1951," said Paul Saffo, president of the ‘
‘ Institute for the Future. "In 1951, TV really started
‘ to take off, and in subsequent years it ‘
‘ dramatically increased its reach. That's what ‘
‘ we'll see with the Internet in the next few years." ‘
‘ HOW ABOUT SOME HISTORICAL PERSPECIVE ‘
‘ ON THE INTERNET’S WORLD-WIDE-WEB? ‘
‘ Late 1980’s Tim Berners-Lee’s idea about ‘
‘ storing random associations between disparate ‘
‘ things (like the human brain does) takes shape. ‘
‘ His boss allows him to work on his ‘pet project’ ;
‘ full time. ‘
‘ 1990 specifications for a Universal Document ‘
‘ Identifiers (later URL’s), Hypertext Markup ‘
‘ Language (HTML) and Hypertext Transfer ‘
‘ Protocol (HTTP) were first published. ‘
‘ 11-94 Fed-Ex did it! ”…It was not done with an ‘
‘ enormous amount of study or thought. It was
‘ just we needed to go do this.” It was on-line
‘ Internet –based package tracking and it re-wrote ‘
‘ the book on what business could do with the ‘
‘ Internet.” ‘
‘ 8-95 Netscape sets the stage for many wild ‘
‘ IPO-rides to come. It sold initial shares for $28 ‘
‘ rising to $70 a share within two months, rose ‘
‘ to $117 in 1997 and finally selling in 1998 to ‘
‘ AOL for $40 a share. The strategy (intentional ‘
‘ or not ) was create huge expectations, drive up ‘
‘ the stock price and sell before making any ‘
‘ money! ‘
‘ 5-16-96 Bill Gates sends out ‘The Memo’ noting ‘
‘ “In this memo I want to make clear that our ‘
‘ focus on the Internet is critical to every part of ‘
‘ our business. The Internet is the most important ‘
single development to come along since the ‘
‘ IBM PC was introduced in 1981. It is even more ‘
‘ important than the arrival of the Graphical User ‘
‘ Interface (GUI).” ‘
‘ The translation, until now Microsoft has been ‘
‘ dead wrong about the impact of the Internet. ‘
‘ 12-96 AOL has 7 MM subscribers. ‘
‘ 12-1-96 AOL introduces the $19.95 flat rate ‘
‘ and four weeks later user hours surged from ‘
‘ about 46 million a month to over 102 million. ‘
‘ 12-9-1996 Cisco reports a fiscal 1996-97 ‘
‘ run-rate of $1B (that’s Billion) for its business- ‘
‘ to-business WWW site. ‘
‘ 2-97 AOL has 8 MM subscribers (see 12-96 or ‘
‘ just 2 months ago) ‘
‘ 10-27-97 The Dow tumbles 500 points and ‘
‘ 30% of those trying to access Charles Schwab & ‘
‘ Co. could NOT get to the company’s www site. ‘
‘ 3-26-99 The Melissa virus spreads via ‘
‘ Internet E-Mail. It overwhelmed ”...tens of ‘
‘ thousands of messaging servers worldwide in ‘
‘ a few hours.” (InternetWeek 12-20-99) ‘
‘ 2003 electronic business-to-business revenue ‘
‘ is expected to exceed $1.5T (that’s Trillion) ‘
